The first commercial macadamia orchard was established in Australia around 1888. Before that, in 1858, Walter Hill was the Brisbane Botanical Garden Administrator. He was given a few nuts to plant and cultivate. Early aboriginal tribes thought the macadamia nut was poisonous, so Hill was petrified to see his assistant eating the kernels one day, exclaiming how delicious they tasted. After a few days and upon seeing the boy didn't get sick, Hill also tried to nuts and was also enthralled, so he started spreading the word.

The macadamia nut is the only Australian plant that ever developed into a commercial crop. The trees takes seven years to grow fruit. Macadamia nut trees live for over sixty years, and a mature tree will produce sixty to one hundred and fifty pounds of nuts a year.

You may have heard the nut called the "Australian nut," the "Queensland nut," and the "bauple nut," to name a few. Macadamia nuts are chiefly grown wherever coffee crops are grown as they require similar climate and altitudes, therefore we had to add a Macadamia flavor to our repertoire!
